Thomas Busching, managing partner of Squire Sanders’ Frankfurt office, holds dual qualifications as lawyer and certified tax consultant. His practice includes taxation, tax-driven legal matters and transactional work. He advises clients on international and domestic tax structuring, inbound and outbound foreign direct investments, real estate, mergers and acquisitions and corporate law. He has worked in Asia for several years and heads the Frankfurt office’s China/Asia desk. He is the author of “Low Taxes on German Real Property Investments,” published in the October 2008 issue of Property Magazine International; co-author of the German Handbook of International Corporation Law; a regular contributor to Internationales Steuerrecht, an international tax journal in Germany; and has spoken on tax issues for most of his professional career. Additional recent publications in which he has contributed include articles in the International Tax Review, International Financial Law Review’s 2007 Guide to Real Estate, AFIRE News, Property Finance Europe, Practical Law Company Quarterly, Property Law Journal, Journal of Retail and Leisure Property, CiJ Journal and Investment & Real Estate Development. Mr. Busching is a member of the Frankfurt sections of the German Bar Association and the German Tax Consultants Association.
Representative Experience
Advising in the US$750 million buyout and restructuring of a joint venture of a Russia-based gas company. Advising in the acquisition of a company holding a large residential property portfolio by a US-based hedge fund valued at more than US$1 billion. Providing counsel as first foreign legal adviser to the administration of Russia’s president on amendments to the Russian Tax Code. Advising in the acquisition of various Germany-based machinery companies by China-based competitors. - Providing counsel in the tax structuring and acquisition of a number of properties in Germany for international private equity/family offices.
