Tokyo Summer Program
Our Tokyo office provides counsel and guidance to many of Japan's largest companies in their worldwide operations and assists non-Japanese companies in establishing business operations in the Japanese market. The office works closely with and draws upon the experience of all of the firm lawyers, particularly those in the Asia and California offices. In 1955, the firm first operated in Tokyo as an office of Graham & James LLP and was one of the first American law firms in the area. The Tokyo office was subsequently closed due to regulatory conditions and, when those conditions permitted, reopened in the 1980s. Relationships that began when the office initially opened continue to thrive.
Our Tokyo office lawyers have substantial experience working with clients in areas of financing, mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures and partnerships, distributions, intellectual property rights, licensing, immigration and trade relations. The office also focuses strongly on the e-business, energy and telecommunications industries.
Summer associates interested in our Tokyo office are encouraged to split their summer between Squire Sanders Tokyo and a domestic Squire Sanders office. Both domestically and abroad, our summer programs are designed to provide summer associates with meaningful and challenging work experiences similar to those of first-year associates. Regular feedback and ongoing training are an integral part of the program. Squire Sanders’ commitment to technology, including providing laptops to all summer associates, creates an atmosphere where communication and information seeking can be done when and where you need it.
Our summer associates work on transactions that take them out of the library, out of the office, and, on occasion, out of Tokyo. Because the Tokyo office practice is heavily transaction-oriented, summer associate applicants should have some background in basic corporate law issues, such as corporate structures, secured transactions (UCC), securities, tax and bankruptcy. Japanese language skills are required. We also value cultural sensitivity because it is critical to successfully interacting with our clients from around the world.
Summer associate compensation is competitive with the local market.
