Squire Sanders Adds Litigation Strength to Tokyo, Los Angeles Offices
7 November 2008
Senior
trial lawyer Matthew E. Digby has joined global law firm Squire, Sanders & Dempsey L.L.P. as a partner resident in its Tokyo office. Digby, who will provide litigation and litigation counseling services to Japan-based clients and clients with matters in US-based courts, joins Squire Sanders from Bingham McCutchen LLP.
“Squire Sanders has a long tradition of supporting the global business goals and legal needs of our Japan-based clients, whether those are in investments, litigation and dispute resolution, managing a subsidiary or operating a business in the United States,” said Howard J. C. Nicols, the firm’s advocacy group coordinator. “With Matt, we have additional opportunities to assist those clients as well as clients with US-based businesses. We're very pleased to have this strong addition to our national litigation practice and our Los Angeles and Tokyo offices.”
Digby will continue to represent US-based clients while expanding his practice in Tokyo, where Squire Sanders has had a longtime presence through a 2000 firm combination with Graham & James LLP. Leading legal directories such as
The Asia Pacific Legal 500 and
AsiaLaw gave the firm’s Tokyo lawyers high ranking in banking and finance; joint ventures; capital markets; and corporate, mergers and acquisitions, and project work.
“Matt has a wealth of experience advising and representing Japan-based businesses on litigation and dispute resolution issues,” said Steven S. Doi, Tokyo office managing partner, adding Digby recently was lead lawyer for numerous litigation matters in New York and Los Angeles involving breach of contract disputes, unfair competition and patent infringement, and has worked with Squire Sanders lawyers on the defense side in some of those cases.
“We currently advise several Japan-based clients on prelitigation and litigation matters in US courts by collaborating with the firm’s outstanding network of US trial lawyers,” Doi said. “The sophisticated on-the-ground counsel Matt provides, combined with the ongoing support of US-based trial lawyers, strengthens that global network and our ability to provide litigation advice and support to our clients in the Tokyo office.”
Digby received his B.A.,
magna cum laude, in 1973 from the University of Notre Dame, his M.A. in 1975 from Sophia University in Tokyo and his J.D. in 1978 from Columbia University Law School. He started his legal career at Marks & Murase, the leading New York-based Japan legal boutique that merged in 1997 with the firm now known as Bingham McCutchen.
